MAP STORY

This is one special "map" from the past. Dr Orlando Ferguson illustrated this map in 1893 to support his firm belief that the Earth was flat and square! Ferguson's inspiration came from the bible where this passage is taken literally: "After I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth to prevent any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree." This map also has an interesting illustration on its side that Ferguson uses to justify why Earth must be stationary. It shows two little men clinging to a speeding globe with the explanatory text "These men are flying on the globe at a rate of 65,000 miles per hour around the center of the earth (in their minds). Think of that speed!" And for those who wanted to know more, Ferguson invites them to send him $0.25 for a book that "Knocks the Globe Theory Clean Out!"

The paper is thick, be careful not to fold a corner while unboxing the map, which I did. Thankfully it' now hidden by the frame! The artwork is brilliant, all about natural aspects of the islands.
