MAP STORY

BLAEU, Willem (1571-1638). Americae nova tabula (around 1638).

This is the famous map by Blaeu of the Americas. It stands out partly because of its intricate borders made of illustrated vignettes. The top of the map has 9 vignettes with town views and, at the sides of the map, are 10 costumed figures.

The Blaeu Americae nova tabula map also comes with an array of sea monsters and oddities such as a pair of Patagonian Giants, "The Isle of demons" (I. dos Demonios) and the mythical Lake Parime (at the top of South America) which was thought to be the site of El Dorado.

Blaeu has very few maps that relate to North America and this is by far the most decorative.
